Island Games Gotland 2017

With the new season opening its time to start thinking about the Island Games in Gotland next year.

This year’s competition will form the basis for team selection for 2017. The criteria is as follows:

  • Eligible to compete by virtue of Island Games Criteria (ie Manx, IoM resident etc).
  • Current member of Manx Tri Club and British Triathlon.
  • Actively competing in 2016 season.

Between 1st January 2016 and 12th September 2016 athletes must achieve the consideration time at a recognised Standard / Olympic Distance event (1500m open water swim - 40k bike - 10k run) and evidence of results submitted to the head of performance (Graham Stigant).

·         Male: - 2 hours 9min

·         Female: - 2 hours 25min

Manx Tri Club Selection Committee has the right to award a discretionary team place where consideration time has not been met due to a specific reason (e.g. injury / age restriction on taking part in Standard distance event during qualification period / distance of event changed by organiser due to weather conditions etc. - this list is not exhaustive).

For a discretionary place to be awarded the Committee will take into account results of other distance triathlons events / individual event performance such as open water swimming 1500m, 25mile Time Trial, and 10k running during the qualification period.  Previous experience of racing over the standard triathlon distance 1500m, 40k, 10k in open water will also be taken into consideration.

Should an athlete attain a consideration time for the Commonwealth Games this would also be a consideration time for Island Games.

The rule from the IGA is that the minimum age for competitors is 18 on 31 December 2017.

Course Records Smashed at the Sprint Weekend

The Microgaming Sprint Triathlon Festival weekend saw the course records smashed in both the Men's & Ladies Individual events and in the Team event. 78 competitors started in possibly the best conditions that the event has enjoyed over the last 8 years.  It was great to see a big field of 25 ladies and a lot of new facers and 1st time triathletes.

In perfect weather conditions on Saturday, Becky Storrie led the womens field out of the Swim onto the Bike and No.1 was the position she held right to the finish line.  Becky, who already held the ladies course record, absolutely destroyed her previous time, finishing in an amazing 1:02:23 (which also placed her 4th overall).  Jenny Newbery, another very talented triathlete had chased Becky hard in the swim and on the bike, but couldn't match Becky's run & finished 2nd in 1:06:03 (9th overall).  Wendy Sandford completed the podium in 3rd in 1:16:38 (31st overall)

15 year old Emma Draper, competing in her 1st Sprint Tri was the first Youth, finishing in an excellent 1:23:40 (11th Lady & 55th overall)

Amber Carridge had a great race to take the Senior Women Category Prize in 1:18:15 (4th Lady & 27th overall)

Christine O'Shea was the Veteran Women Category Women in 1:19:27 (5th Lady & 45th overall)

Becky Storrie, winner of the Ladies Race, pictured with her Team Mates, John Swindlehurst & Rob Parker from the Gym & Tonic Tri'ers who took 2nd place in the Mixed Team race.

In the Men's race, last year's joint winners Joseph Ricciardi and Andrew Nash found themselves head to head again.  Joseph had a lead of 1min 15s over Andy as they came out of the swim, and then used his strength to add a further 50s on the bike.  Despite the best T1 split of 24s, and the best run split of 17:21, Andy wasn't able to close the time gap, and it finished in that order, Joseph taking 1st place and Andy 2nd.  They both however had raised the bar to a new level.  Joseph finishing in a blistering 56m 27s and Andy in 57m 52s.  Age & experience definitely have advantages as there was nothing 'Veteran' about Juan Kinley's time of 1:02:23 to give him 3rd place.

Kyle Cochrane put in a very credible performance in his 1st Sprint Tri to be placed 1st Male Youth in 1:25:01 (58th overall)

Ryan Downey & Paul Swindale raced very hard but weren't able to close the gap on 3rd place Juan, Ryan taking the Senior Men's category prize in 1:03:37 and Paul the Veteran Mens Category in 1:03:49)

Terry Bugg and Nigel Hendy the 2 Super Vets just keep getting better and better, both improving their Personal Bests, Terry by over a minute to take the Category prize in 1:19:08 (44th overall).

Team Day

Sunday's weather wasn't as kind with a fresh and fairly chilly Northerly wind blowing down the promenade.  It was however dry and it didn't prove a hindrance to those who were out to challenge the previous course record.  42 Teams, comprising 123 competitors put on a great display of team racing.  Josh Corteen swimming for RGS Young Guns barely had time to get wet, completing his swim and transition handover in 9mins 4s to give Joe Haddock a lead out on to the bike course.  Robin ('Batman') Garry riding for the Bikestyle Bandits wasn't going to let the small matter of being 3rd out onto the bike get in the way, as he overtook Joe, bringing the bike leg home in 27:00.  Meanwhile Gianni Epifani (Team NSC), Roger Raatgever Team Microgaming), Liam Mazzone (Tri Hard), Rob Sorby (RGS Old Boys) & Paul Kneen (Team GPR) were all determined to mix it up and together with Joe all racked their bikes in under 31 mins.  By now Batman had handed over the baton to Ben Corkill for the run.  Ben didn't look back and the team (Joe Ricciardi/Batman/Ben) took the win in an incredible 54mins 45s.  Team NSC (Luke Annett/Gianni/Andy Nash) took 2nd in 56mins 42s and Team Microgaming (who had shared Joseph for the swim leg/Roger/Tim Knott) took 3rd in 58mins 21s.  The RGS Young Guns (Josh/Joe/Connell Jacques) weren't very far behind to take 1st Place in the Youth Team Category (6th overall) in 1:01:01.

In the Mixed Teams, Team Mac (Heather McGowan/Jon McGowan/Keith Gerrard) stormed around the course, to take 1st Prize in 1:03:17, Keith making light work of the 5k run in 15mins 55s!!  2nd place were the Gym & Tonic Tri'ers (Rob Parker/John Swindlehurst/Becky Storrie).

Heather McGowan, Jon McGowan & Keith Gerrard winners of the Mixed Team race.

The all Ladies Team of 'No Direction' (Silla Parnell/Cal Brown/Beccy Miller) clearly did know where they were going and took 1st Female Team in 1:13:55.  2nd place were the Tri'S of Carroll Powell/Clare Ledger & Kathryn Quayle in 1:17:28

Junior Tri Postponed

The MTC Committee has reluctantly taken the decision to postpone this weekend's Junior Triathlon (Sat 2nd April) due to the poor weather forecast of strong winds and heavy rain.

The Committee will look at alternative dates with the NSC for a date in June or July and will publicise the new date as soon as it has been confirmed.  Any entries already received can be carried forward to the rescheduled event or you may opt to receive a refund by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Manx International Cycle GP

As Part of the British Elite Championship Series this event will bring the top echelon of British Cycle Sport back to Manx roads on Sunday 10th April 2016.

It will be an annual event which will lead to the Island bidding to host the British National Road Championships in 2018.

The event will see three races for Elite Men, Elite Women and 2nd/3rd category riders being run simultaneously. That means approx. 450 riders and three separate race convoys on the road at once!

We need at least 250 volunteers to act as Stewards and Marshals on the day.

The duty hours will be from 12.30 pm to 6.30 pm at the latest. Lots of volunteers will be 'stood down' from approximately 4.00 pm onwards. The duty tasks will not be onerous or complicated, it will be mostly providing a 'hi viz' presence, marshalling barrier positions and helping people to cross the roads, all with a big smile! The volunteers will be the 'happy face' of the event as they were for the Commonwealth Youth Games back in 2011.

All volunteers will receive a souvenir T Shirt and will be entered into a raffle with some great prizes on offer.

We really need your help to stage this event which will lift Isle of Man Cycling to a new level. There are no local events on that day and you can still get your Sunday morning ride in if you want to.

Early commitment to this event is essential as we have to plan resources effectively.

Can you please let me know if you will help to make this a massive Isle of Man success?

Thanks in advance.

Steve Shimmin

Microgaming Triathlon Festival Weekend 2016

The 2016 Microgaming Triathlon Festival Weekend will be held over the weekend of Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th April at the Ramsey Swimming Pool.

This is a great season opener event over the classic sprint distance of 750m Swim / 20k Cycle & 5k Run, and being a Pool based swim is ideal for the 1st time triathlete.  The Swim is 30 lengths of the Pool, the 20k Cycle course goes out towards Bride, through Andreas and back to Ramsey and then the 5k run is based in and around the picturesque setting of the Mooragh Park.

Like last year, the Individuals will race on the Saturday and then the Team Challenge day will be on the Sunday.   This gives any Individuals competing on the Saturday the opportunity to also race on the Sunday with their friends, family or colleagues.  Teams of 2 or 3 may enter.

The minimum age is 15 years (based on the age at 31st December 2016).

Enter on-line

or use the Postal entry forms which can be downloaded below

We need about 25 marshals to run this event and as a small club, we are asking all entrants (who are Island residents) to nominate a marshal.  This can be anyone over the age of 18 yrs.  Obviously not all the nominated marshals will be required, but we will advise those who are as soon as possible and training will be given.  It's only a couple of hours, and is a great event to watch and be involved in.

Gold Coast 2018

2015 IoM Championships

It was great to see so many newcomers and first time triathletes to the IoM Triathlon Championships at the Mooragh Park in Ramsey.  Antony Bell-Scott & Karen Shimmin are the new 2015 Standard Distance Triathlon Champions, whilst Will Draper and Lisa Dunwell are the new Sprint Champions.

Antony Bell Scott ran a fabulous race neck and neck with Juan Kinley through the swim and the bike, but Abs was able to pull away on the run to take 1st place in 2:03:51s, with Juan 2nd in 2:07:15 and Ryan Downey in 3rd.

Although Karen was the only lady, she was strong throughout, having had a great years racing and finishing 8th overall against 29 men, in a time of 2:19:56

15 year old Will Draper, and first time triathlete showed that he is an excellent runner as well as a cyclist and overhauled Russ Collister on the final leg to take 1st place in a time of 1:06:26 in the Sprint, with Russ finishing in 1:06:42.  Tom Isaac, making a return after a year off, finished strongly in 3rd in a time of 1:08:56.

Lisa Dunwell had a great race with Jan Catchpole in the Ladies Sprint, with Lisa pulling ahead of Jan on the run leg.  Lisa won in a time of 1:20:31, with Jan in 2nd in 1:24:23 and Beverly Broderick in 3rd in 1:25:43.

The Teams all had great races in their own categories with some very close head to heads on each of their individual stages, particularly Robin Garry up against Gianni Epifani and Darren Bell on the Bike leg in the Standard and Ben Corkill, Kevin Loundes & Aaron Livesy on the run.

Thank you to all the marshals who did a fantastic job, and to Steve Shimmin for his very entertaining commentary and Graham & Sue Hughes for all the timekeeping.

Ironman Barcelona 2015

Well done to Wendy Sandford  who finished her first Ironman in Spain at the weekend finishing in 12:43:04 gaining 35th position in age group.

Also competing was Christine O'Shea who finished in 13:18:20 for 25th place in age group. Christine has done Niece and Bolton previously.

Don't forget its The Ironman World Championship, Hawaii this weekend 10th October starting at 06:25 local time Saturday, 17:25 our time. Live streaming is available on the Ironman website.

BTF U20's Tri Festival

Joseph Ricciardi and Becky Storrie travelled to Leicester for the BTF U20's Triathlon Festival on 6th September at Mallory Park.  This is one of the Elite race series and it was great that both Joseph & Becky were invited to  take part.   Joseph finished in a time of 1:06:26 - 25th in Age Group and 34th overall.  Becky always put's in a huge effort, but this took it's toll & unfortunately she was unwell after the Bike Leg and wasn't able to finish the race.  The competition at this level is fierce, and both of them gained a lot from the experience.
